RICHARD ALLINSON
Richard began his professional radio career in the early 1980s. His 25+ years in broadcasting have revolved around two of the most prestigious radio stations in the UK. He joined Capital Radio (London's largest commercial radio station) on a five week contract in 1980, and ended up presenting a variety of programmes during a 17 year residency at the network, including their chart show, the early breakfast show, the afternoon slot and the late-night 10 p.m. to midnight show. He left the station in 1997 to join the BBC's national network Radio 2 and brought a fresh approach to their late night music format. With an eclectic mix of music and studio guests (which ranged from politicians to musicians and authors to film stars), Richard was rewarded with a coveted Sony Radio Gold Award in 1998 for the best late night music programme. He was the network's choice to host the programme marking Paul McCartney's return to The Cavern in Liverpool (1999) and for a number of years in the late 90s and early 00s he presented Radio 2's coverage of both 'The Brits' and the renowned Ivor Novello Awards. Richard is constantly in demand as a broadcaster. This has ranged from being a regular presenter on VH1 in the 90s to his current daily show on BFBS (British Forces Broadcasting Service) which he manages to fit into a schedule that includes his commitments to Radio 2, BBC Radio Oxford and a wide variety of voice-over work. His enthusiasm for not only music, but also the arts in general has seen him as a regular judge on the prestigious Laurence Olivier Theatre Awards, whilst a more than healthy interest in both food and fine wine has seen him not only dine with royalty, but famously spill a drink over Madonna!
STEVE LEVINE
Steve has worked in the recording industry since the mid 70s. His early days were spent as a engineer working with The Clash and pop bands such as Sailor (produced by Brice Johnston of The Beach Boys, a group that Steve would eventually produce himself). He found the title engineer confining for his talents and took the step into both production and songwriting, signing a publishing deal with Rondor Music and using the money from his advance to buy what was then the very latest in studio gadgetry - the Linn Drum! Steve's reputation as a producer in the 80s was second to none. He was responsible for all of Culture Club's classic hits and the bands' first three albums, which included the multi platinum "Colour by Numbers". Culture Club has sold well over 20 million records worldwide and 'Karma Chameleon' still remains one of Virgin Records' biggest ever selling singles. Since then he was worked with artists as diverse as Stevie Wonder, China Crisis, Ziggy Marley, Gary Moore, Motorhead and the aforementioned Beach Boys. In 2005, Steve was instrumental in the release of a charity record following the horrific Tsunami of December 26th 2004. His status ensured that Brian Wilson, Barry & Robin Gibb, John Anderson, Rick Wakeman, Sir Cliff Richard, Boy George, Russell Watson and Steve Winwood all contributed to the song which was a Top 5 single in the UK charts and a No. 1 on the independent charts. Steve's love of music has never diminished and he is constantly listening to new artists and bands, looking for emerging talent that he'd like to work with. The current fledgling act to benefit from his experience is 6 Day Riot, a group based around singer Tamara Schlesinger and guitarist Soren Bonke, who are building a solid reputation through both their official and MySpace websites and gainging particular support from the BBC's digital network 6Music. Away from his production duties, Steve is a regular contributor to 6Music, where he reviews new releases and is a resident expert on digital downloading. He also sits on a variety of boards within the UK music industry and is a respected speaker on music technology, particularly with Apple, for whom he's given talks and lecturess not only at their various UK Applstroes but also also at key events such as MacExpo. Steve is currently playing Obi Wan Kanobi to Richard's Luke Skywalker in teaching him the ways of the Mac - Richard being the final member of the Magnum Opus production team to realise the error of his former PC ways!
NEIL MYNERS
Neil has worked in radio since finishing a degree and post graduate studies in music. He began as a BBC sound engineer in the mid-80s, moving on to become a radio producer in 1989. He has been a freelance producer and writer since 1995. His programmes have won awards in both the commercial and corporate markets and at the Sony Radio Awards. Over the years, Neil has worked with most of the leading names in UK music radio (Alan Freeman, Charlie Gillett, Bob Harris, Tommy Vance, Annie Nightingale, Steve Lamacq, Johnnie Walker etc.). He was Richard Allinson's music programmer and on-air producer at the BBC when Richard was presented with his Gold Award in 1998. (Neil also worked with Richard on events such as the Brit and Ivor Novello Awards, McCartney's return to The Cavern and The Cambridge Folk Festival). His documentary series commemorating the 25th anniversary of the death of Elvis Presley was a key element to writer and presenter Paul Gambaccini being presented with the 'Broadcaster Of The Year' Sony Gold in 2003. His breadth of music knowledge through education, performance and personal interest has meant Neil is at home producing long running series in Opera and Classical as he is on World Music. He also spent several years producing internationally syndicated programmes in alternative rock and dance. For the past five years, Neil has been the daytime music programmer for BBC Radio 2's annual charity 'Music Marathon' for 'Children In Need'. He has also been music programmer and producer for various presenters on the same network as well as writing the station's popular daily 'Popmaster' quiz. Amongst the documentary series he has either produced, researched or written (or all three) are 'Manhattan, The Most Musical Island On Earth', 'From Band To Brand', 'Maggie's Cultural Revolution' (the Thatcher Years), 'Maple Leaf Revolution' (Canadian Music Special) and 'The Record Producers'. Away from music, Neil enjoys nothing better than some decent cheese and wine (Manchego and Rioja being this week's favourites) accompanied by back to back re-runs for 'Frasier' (whose hairline Neil has perfected to a tee!)
'The Record Producers' - format devised by Steve, written by Neil and presented by Richard. Co-produced, edited and mixed by Steve and Neil for Magnum Opus Broadcasting
