The Record Producers

Next Show: Easter Monday
9th April, 7 - 8 PM BBC Radio 2

BBC Radio 2

BBC Radio 2 presents a new series of special programmes exploring the magical influence of the record producer.

For the final programme in this first series of 'The Record Producers', Richard Allinson and Steve Levine focus on the talents of Hugh Padgham, a man who successfully made the transition from engineer to producer, often with the same artist.

His credits include Genesis, The Police, XTC, Sting, Human League,David Bowie and Phil Collins, for whom he helped create his iconic and trademark drum sound.

Each episode in this series looks at specific aspects of the role ofthe producer and the recording process. This time around, Richard andSteve consider two specific areas - the technical skills an engineercan bring to production and the path of a song from demo through tofinished release.

With the help of original demos from XTC, a very early and rarelyheard recording of Sting's song 'Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic' and exclusive access to original multi-tracks, they unravel the journey of a song from inception to completion and talk with Hughabout the creation, both intentional and accidental, of iconic andinfluential sounds.

'The Record Producers: Hugh Padgham' is broadcast 19:00 - 20:00, Monday 9th April on BBC Radio 2 (A new series begins in May)

Broadcaster Richard Allinson & Record Producer Steve Levine have exclusive access to the recording studios and writing rooms of some of the world's most successful record producers. In this series we meet Arif Mardin, Trevor Horn, Nile Rodgers, Hugh Padgham, Bob Clearmountain & Tony Visconti. They are much more than names on an album sleeve. They are artists in their own right, who have collaborated with some of the greatest recording stars of all time to craft iconic recordings. Their creative vision has both shaped popular music history and mapped out the musical landscape for generations to come.

Each show in the series features an hour in the company of these maverick craftsmen who, in the company of both a renowned broadcaster and respected producer talk both candidly and openly about the music they've created. They reveal secrets behind the recording of some of the world's most recognisable songs.

Arif Mardin has produced Dusty Springfield, The Bee Gees, Aretha Franklin, Daryl Hall & John Oates, Chaka Khan and Norah Jones.

As a musician Nile Rogers famously created the Chic sound, his guitar technique has been emulated by many musical legends and as a record producer has re-invented Madonna, David Bowie and Duran Duran.

Tony Visconti has produced seminal records with David Bowie as well as working with Thin Lizzy, Paul McCartney, Sparks and T-Rex along with the new album from Morrissey.

As well as producing hits for The Police, Sting, XTC and Genesis Hugh Padgham quietly created the much-copied monster drum sound which became the musical signature of Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel. "The Record Producers" reveals how this sound was created.

The name Bob Clearmountain appears on more album sleeves than even he can remember. He is aware of Bruce Springsteen, Bryan Adams, The Rolling Stones, Sheryl Crow, The Finn Brothers, Robbie Williams, The Corrs, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, Roxy Music, Tori Amos….

The producer highlighted for the first of these special programmes (Easter Monday 19:00 - 20:00), is TREVOR HORN. From Buggles in 1979 to the brand new Pet Shop Boys album released this May, Trevor's sound has not only defined popular music, but pushed both studio technology and its capabilities to the limit. His CV includes Frankie Goes To Hollywood, ABC, Grace Jones, Seal and Yes. For the very first time we discover the production secrets behind songs Trevor has recorded with these artists

The finished records are testament to the care and craft of each individual record producer. You'll listen to your favourite songs in a brand new way. From the very first musical idea to the final fade of the finished mix we uncover the magical influence of the Record Producer.
